At Environment Southland, we lead the sustainable management of Murihiku Southland's natural and physical resources - water, land, air and the coast. Our Regional Planning team plays a central role in this kaupapa. We work with communities, iwi, stakeholders and partner agencies to plan for the sustainable management of our taiao, balancing environmental, cultural, social and economic outcomes in line with our legislative responsibilities and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.

Due to internal progression, we have an opportunity to join our team. This is an exciting time to be involved in regional planning in Murihiku Southland. As the local government landscape evolves, we are working with partner councils and mana whenua to prepare for a new planning system while continuing to deliver key regional plan and policy projects. The mahi is varied, meaningful and has a lasting impact on our region.

We're looking for a motivated, curious and collaborative planner who enjoys building strong relationships. You'll bring a relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in environmental planning, resource management or a related field, along with excellent communication, analytical and report writing skills. Experience in project management, or a willingness to develop in this area, will be an advantage.

Emphasis is on:

• Strong experience analysing policy and developing planning solutions.
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly to varied audiences.
• Building effective relationships across Council and the community.

Knowledge and experience:

• A tertiary qualification in planning and/or relevant experience in environmental or resource management (five years' experience desirable).
• Eligibility for membership of the New Zealand Planning Institute.
• Knowledge of the Resource Management Act and related legislation.
• Understanding of policy development, planning processes and environmental management.
• Knowledge of spatial planning concepts, including transport, natural hazards and urban development.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations and their application in regional planning.
• Strong analytical, report writing and presentation skills.
• Experience working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
