Environmental Monitoring Assistant

We're looking for a Summer Student - Environmental Monitoring to join our team over the summer period and gain practical experience across a range of environmental monitoring activities.

The focus of the role will be supporting our recreational bathing water quality monitoring programme, collecting samples from rivers and coastal sites across Southland. You'll also support other monitoring programmes and project work.

About the role

The Summer Student - Environmental Monitoring will support the Environmental Monitoring team with fieldwork, environmental data collection and other operational and project work over the summer period.

This role focuses on

  • Supporting recreational bathing water quality sampling across Southland;
  • Assisting with water quality, hydrology and other environmental monitoring programmes;
  • Preparing, checking and maintaining field and sampling equipment;
  • Recording field observations and monitoring information accurately;
  • Supporting sample handling, data processing and quality checks;
  • Supporting other Environmental Monitoring projects and activities as required.

What you'll bring

  • Currently studying towards a relevant tertiary qualification in environmental science, environmental management, natural resource management or a related field;
  • Good attention to detail and a methodical approach to your work;
  • Good communication and teamwork skills;
  • Confidence using computers and willingness to learn new systems and technology;
  • A reasonable level of physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions; and A full current driver licence.

This position is available from 16 November 2026 - 19 February 2027. You are eligible to apply if you are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution or have graduated this year. All Summer Student roles are offered at a rate of $29.90 per hour and a 37.5-hour week.
