Biosecurity Assistant

Summer Students Programme

This varied role is primarily field based, as well as a mix of data entry and stakeholder communication in office. The Biosecurity Assistant will work closely alongside Biosecurity Officers to complete the following work programme:

Biosecurity Pest Plants:

  • Pest plant control & monitoring
  • Site inspections & landowner communications (including phone calls).
  • Engaging & working with community groups and the public
  • Input of historical and current data for different projects (office based).
  • Assist biological control programme

Possum Monitoring:

  • Planning possum density monitoring
  • Setting up and collecting field measurements and data including wax tag possum and rodent ink pads monitoring at sites throughout Southland
  • Analysing, recording and reporting monitoring results
  • Communication with landowners and stakeholders

The preferred candidate for this position will have:

  • a current full, clean, drivers licence;
  • first aid training;
  • previous outdoors experience, on farm or in the bush;
  • experience in herbicide application, or a willingness to learn how to.
  • a willingness to work both alone and alongside others in a team
  • a proactive health and safety mind-set;
  • ability to work away from home when required (accommodation will be provided)
  • experience with GPS and GIS (or other navigation and mapping tools);
  • Able to work or approach a range of landowners / occupiers

This position requires a moderate level of fitness. You will also have great customer service and public relations skills. A first aid training qualification or prior 4WD experience is desirable.

This position is available from November 2025 - February 2026. You are eligible to apply if you are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution or have graduated this year. All Summer Student roles are offered at a rate of $28.95 per hour and a 37.5-hour week.
