In partnership with our community, Environment Southland (Southland Regional Council) is responsible for the sustainable management of Southland's natural resources - our land, our water, our air and our coast. As a Regional Council we operate across a large geographical region which extends from Stewart Island to Fiordland.

Having recently undergone an organisational redesign to ensure that we have the right structure and resources in place to respond to the changing needs of our communities, and the unique environment that we operate in, we currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Scientist Freshwater.

This is a newly created role within our Science Integration team and you will be responsible for leading and supporting cutting-edge research, analysis and consulting projects in the field of freshwater systems, biodiversity, water quality and ecosystem services.

As a senior expert in the organisation, you will be responsible for managing and contributing to complex freshwater studies, mentoring scientists and technicians, and providing strategic leadership for water-related projects.

You will be expected to apply advanced modelling and analysis to address critical freshwater challenges, working with cross-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.

If you have a post-graduate qualification in a relevant field and a minimum of 10 years' experience in freshwater ecosystem research, modelling and resource management with expertise in advanced statistical analysis and modelling tools then you may be the person we are looking for.

We have a lifestyle that is second to none, with easy access to beaches, rivers, lakes, ski fields, national parks and first-class sports facilities. We pride ourselves on the support we give our team to ensure a good work‑life balance is a priority. And with affordable real estate, short commutes and a great range of schools on offer there is something here for everyone!

An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $112,500 - $118,750.
